| Gemboree 2010 Devonport City Council is excited to announce that the city has secured hosting rights for the 2010 Gemboree. Gemboree is the National Gem and Mineral Show, the largest gem and mineral show in Australia. Gemboree is held annually, rotating around the States and was last held in Tasmania in 2006 in Hobart, attracting over 10,000 people during the Easter period. 2nd to the 5th of April. The Devonport Gemboree will be held at the Forbes Street Basketball Centre from April 2 (Good Friday) through to April 5, 2010 and is expected to attract similar, if not better crowds than the Hobart event. The event was last held in Devonport in 1989 and attracted over 8,000 visitors. In the past, Gemborees have always proven to provide a substantial boost to tourism. There are over 190 gem clubs in Australia and this national show is the premier event for those clubs. The Gemboree involves four main activities: * The Exhibition – approximately 75 displays from commercial dealers in gems, minerals and jewellery. * The Competition – approximately 1000 separate gem and mineral entries from clubs all over Australia. * Tailgating – a large car boot sale operates outside the show for the duration of the event, with hobbyists from all over the State coming to swap and sell. * Recreation – activities are conducted for visitors, both on sire and organised excursions to local points of interest For more information please contact Gemboree Event Organiser Neil Newman on 0429 000 904 or DCC Communications Officer Janine Phillips on 6424 0511.
